Back in 2019, before life with kids began, my wife and I started our first year of marriage traveling the country, making our home base in three very different states along the way. Our first stop was in central Florida for three months. The time here allowed us to uncover the quiet, often-overlooked beauty of the Sunshine State, finding joy in each hidden corner we discovered.

Ponce Inlet Lighthouse was nothing short of awe-inspiring. As Florida’s tallest lighthouse, its striking red facade against the bright blue sky felt like a scene out of a dream. The climb up the 203 steps rewarded us with stunning views of the Atlantic coastline, reminding us of Florida’s coastal charm, away from the bustling beaches.

Juniper Springs Boil felt like stepping into a hidden oasis of the past. The crystal-clear spring creek shimmered under the Florida sun, inviting us for a refreshing swim and kayak run. The entire four hours of kayaking was spent surrounded by lush greenery, with the sounds of nature and a giant sunbathing alligator (no joke!) as ambiance. This secluded gem educated us on Florida’s natural beauty and was a perfect spot to disconnect from society for a little while.

Sunglow Pier in Daytona Shores became one of our favorite experiences. It is a wooden pier extending into the ocean that includes a seafood spot right in the middle of it called Crabby Joe’s. In fact, you can feel the waves rock the restaurant as you eat. If you can get past how terrifying that might sound, it is a worthwhile and authentic old Florida adventure.

Flagler Avenue in New Smyrna Beach has classic beach town vibes and vintage charm. Lined with quirky shops, cozy eateries, and live music spots, this avenue leads right to a beautiful beach. We’d grab an ice cream cone at sunset, then wander the beach and watch the heat lightning flash in the sky over the ocean once it became dark enough.

These months spent exploring central Florida gave us confidence in our abundant blessings from God. He has the same for you when you look for it!
